Discovering you have osteoarthritis in your feet and ankles can be disconcerting, but understanding how it affects your body is the first step toward managing it effectively. Osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis, can also impact any joint, including those in your feet and ankles. In the foot, the big toe is often the primary site of osteoarthritis. This condition occurs when the normal cycle of joint damage and repair is disrupted, leading to changes in joint structure and function. The damage primarily affects the cartilage, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes bone-on-bone friction during movement. Genetics, joint injuries, and certain medical conditions can increase your risk of developing osteoarthritis. Symptoms vary but can commonly include pain, swelling, stiffness, and even audible noises like crunching or grating when moving the affected joints. If you suspect you have osteoarthritis in your feet or ankles, seeking prompt evaluation and treatment from a podiatrist is important. Left untreated, osteoarthritis can lead to complications like a stiff big toe, bunions, corns and calluses, which can further impair mobility and the quality of life. If you believe you have symptoms of osteoarthritis, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and treatment options tailored to your needs.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

Tennis Players and Big Toe Pain

Big toe pain can be a significant hurdle for competitive tennis players, impacting their performance and enjoyment of the game. This discomfort often stems from repetitive movements, such as pivoting, pushing off, and sudden stops, all of which put strain on the big toe joint. The condition, known as big toe arthritis or hallux rigidus, is characterized by stiffness, swelling, and pain in the joint at the base of the big toe. In tennis players, the constant lateral movements and high-impact footwork can exacerbate this issue. The pain can be particularly debilitating during serves, volleys, and quick direction changes on the court. To manage big toe pain, athletes may need to modify their training routines, wear supportive footwear, and use orthotic inserts. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to alleviate symptoms and restore mobility. If playing tennis has caused pain in your big toe, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer you effective treatment measures.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact David Mansky, DPM of Mansky Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Buschke-Ollendorff Syndrome

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the presence of skin abnormalities, typically in the form of firm, non-tender, rubbery bumps called connective tissue nevi, and bone abnormalities, such as osteopoikilosis. These can occur on the feet. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, meaning one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder. While the skin lesions are usually asymptomatic, they can cause cosmetic concerns. Osteopoikilosis often goes unnoticed and does not typically cause symptoms. Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical examination and imaging studies, such as X-rays. Management of Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome involves monitoring for any potential complications and addressing cosmetic concerns. Podiatrists can help by providing supportive care and addressing any foot-related issues that may arise, such as discomfort or deformities associated with osteopoikilosis. If you develop skin abnormalities affecting the feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and care.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact David Mansky, DPM of Mansky Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

Proper Foot Protection for Gardening

When it comes to gardening, ensuring proper foot protection is essential to prevent injuries and maintain comfort throughout the day. To minimize the risk of injury, it is helpful for gardeners to invest in sturdy, closed-toe footwear with slip-resistant soles that provide traction on various surfaces. Additionally, garden boots or shoes with reinforced toes and puncture-resistant soles can offer extra protection from hazards that may be found in the garden, such as thorny areas. Wearing properly fitting footwear is vital to prevent blisters, chafing, and discomfort during long hours of working in the garden. In hot weather, breathable materials can help keep the feet cool and dry, while waterproof footwear is essential for working in wet or muddy conditions. If you have incurred a foot injury while working outdoors, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact David Mansky, DPM from Mansky Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.
